Permit Searches

by Debbie Caldwell 01/20/2022

One of the most important parts of getting work done on your home is making sure that any work is properly permitted.  It is equally important to run a search on any home you are purchasing to ensure that any work on the home was permitted and closed.

In times gone by, this would require a trip to city hall or at minimum a phone call to the local permitting office.  Today many communities have at least some of their permit available online to search.  A visit to your towns government website should be able to tell you whether they have made their permits searchable.  The older the home the less likely that all permits will be available online and may still require a phone call.  Keep in mind that your home may be located in an unincorporated part of town.  This would require checking the county's website as well.

Today in a few clicks, you can see what work was done, sometimes by who, and whether the permit was closed.

Happy Buying and Selling!
