History in Our Backyard

by Debbie Caldwell 01/31/2024

Did you know that we have a world of history right here in Brevard County.  Today I would like to share a piece of our shared ancient past.  Windover Archeology Site.

Located near Titusville, the site dates to the Middle Archaic period between 6,00 and 5,00 BC.  Windover is a muck pond where the skeletal remains of 168 individuals have been found buried in the peat at the bottom of the pond.  Thanks to the nature of the peat the remains are remarkably well preserved.  The site is a quarter of an acre in size and is located roughly 5 miles from Cape Canaveral.

The site was discovered in 1982 when works were attempting to build a road through the pond to connect to a new housing development.  The excavation beign in 1984 when the state approved funds for Florida State University Professors Glen Doran and David Dickel to study the site.  The age ranges of the remains range from infants to early 60s.

Artifacts were found with the bodies especially the children including woven fabrics, projectile points, and shells.

Today is a National Historic Landmark and is considered to be among the most significant archeological finds in Florida.

Happy History!
