Fort Ann

by Debbie Caldwell 10/20/2024

Established in November 1837, Fort Ann was a U.S. Army Post designed to guard the “Haulover” portage between the Indian River and the Mosquito Lagoon in what is now the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville.

The fort was built by 1st Lieutenant James R. Irwin and was named for the “prettiest girl in Pennsylvania.”  Establishedduring the Second Seminole Indian War, the fort was a strategic portage place used by Native Americans, traders, soldiers to transition from the Indian River to ocean access through the Mosquito Lagoon.  It also served as a supply depot and troop housing by General Thomas Sidney Jesup.

Abandoned in April 1838, there is nothing remaining of the fort except for a marker for the Haulover Canal.  Today residents and visitors can enjoy this natural reminder of wild Florida including waterways and an abundance of plants and wildlife and of course gators.

Happy Exploring.
