This week is a reminder that Florida has a fair amount of invasive species both plants and animals that are damaging to our environment.
Invasive plants include acacia, red sandalwood, orchid tree, wax and club begonias, paper mulberry, Australian pine, bamboo palm, coconut palm, white yam, water-hyacinth, Brazilian jasmine, Chinese fan palm, and bottlebrush. Just to name a few. The list extends to over 170 different invasive species.
When planning your landscaping consider using native plants whenever possible. They are better suited to our climate and are less resource intensive.
Invasive animals include Cuban treefrogs, Cane Toad, Constrictors, Green iguana, black and white tugu. Brown anole, northern curly-tailed lizard, nile monitor, pythons, and anacondas.
Invasive invertebrates include the applesnail, Mexican bromeliad weevil, and the redbay ambrosia beetle.
If you see any of these contact Fish and Wildlife so that they can be safely removed from the area. These invasive animals can crowd out native animals that contribute to a healthy environment.
