Today is Saint Patrick Day. This Irish holiday is widely celebrated across the United States by both Irish and non Irish residents alike. How did it become such a popular holiday here.
The first known celebration occurred in St. Augustine in 1600. The first parade happened a year late in the city.
The Charitable Irish Society of Boston organized the first celebration in 1737 and was attended by the largely Protestants Irish community. Their stated purpose was not ot celebrate a Catholic saint, but to honor their homeland.
The celebrations slowly grew in numbers up and down the colonial communities. Saint Patrick Day events like the week long celebrations we see today started in Savannah GA in 1824. The community hosted communal rituals, commemorative ceremonies, and the parade which still occurs on March 17th regardless of what day of the week it lands on.
Today the Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated nation wide with everything from street parties to parades. Chicago famously dyes the river green, Seattle paint the traffic strip along the parade route green, and people of every walk of life wear green to avoid getting pinched.
How ever you choose to celebrate this a holiday that is sure to bring a smile to your face.
Happy Holiday!
