The base is a staple on the barrier island, butt how did it get there. Today I would like to discuss the history of Patrick Space Force Base.
The Naval Expansion Ave of 1938 authorized the creation of Naval Air Station Banana River which was commissioned on October 1, 1940. The Navy purchased 1,900 acres south of Cocoa Beach. The base began running anti-submarine patrols along the Florida Coast using seaplanes. The landing strip was completed in 1943 allowing for land based planes to operate land at the base. Late in the war the base was used as a POW camp for German soldiers.
At its peak the base was home to 278 aircraft, 587 civilian employees and over 2,800 enlisted and officers. The naval base was closed in September of 1947. A year later the base was transferred to the Air Force. The base was renamed Patrick Air Force Base in August 1950. The base became a hub of activity due to the proximity to the space center between 1966 and 1975.
The base remained an active air force base until December 9, 2020 when it became an official Space Force Base. The base is home to the 45th Space Wing, Air Force Technical Application Center, and the 920th Rescue Wing.
The base will continue to play an active role in protecting the our community as well as contributing to the local economy for years to come.
Happy History!
